GREENHOUSE TECHNICIAN

Experience: Horticulture or Greenhouse Technician Diploma or equivalent experience working in a greenhouse or nursery. Forklift license is an asset.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Planting, growing, and potting up annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs.
  • Precise watering according to each plant’s needs and management of irrigation systems.
  • Monitoring for disease, pests, and other changes in plant health.
  • Monitoring and controlling environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation.
  • Preventing conditions that compromise plant health.
  • Perform inspections to identify and address issues related to pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Scheduling and implementing an IPM program.
  • Ensuring plants are cared for over weekends and holidays.
  • Maintaining the greenhouse and nursery, ensuring it is clean, neat, tidy, and well-organized.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation related to plant growth, environmental conditions, and any treatments or interventions applied.
  • Updating and tracking inventory.
  • Labeling and arranging trays and pots methodically and systematically.
  • Assembling and attaching plant labels.
  • Pack and prepare orders for clients and customer pick-up and delivery.
  • Accurate reporting and updating of plant and growing materials.
  • Ensure all clean-out tasks and startup tasks are completed, including ensuring the greenhouse is cleaned and ready for planting.
  • Ensuring production lines are organized, prepared, cleaned, and maintained.
  • Equipment and facility maintenance tasks include cleaning and repairing equipment and greenhouse structures and ensuring proper functioning of irrigation systems, heating, and ventilation systems.
  • Following all safety protocols and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, including the safe handling and storage of chemicals and PPE

Requirements and skills:

  • Equipment operations such as tractors are considered an asset.
  • A pesticide application license is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a greenhouse or nursery.
  • Experience and understanding of the production of ornamental plants.
  • Practical, hands-on experience growing and caring for hundreds of plants and general gardening knowledge.
  • A solutions-oriented thinker with experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and overcoming plant health issues and pests.
  • Able to use a computer, smartphone, and/or tablet and able to work with Microsoft products and Google Suite.
  • Disciplined, reliable, methodical, and punctual with updating records.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic working environment and are familiar with communication and coordination of tasks using Google Drive and shared documents.
  • Able to take initiative, pursue self-directed tasks, and work independently.
  • Adaptable and flexible with changing weather and daily schedules, accepting that some days may be longer than other days.
  • Able to maintain a solutions-oriented disposition even during stressful situations.
